The Chroma-Key Protocol: Print-Ready AI T-Shirt Designs Every Time

Most AI-generated shirt designs die in post-production — halos, holes, muddy edges. The Chroma-Key Protocol fixes extraction before you ever write the prompt, by choosing the background color based on the shirt you're printing on.

Why AI Designs Fail at Print

When you generate a design on a random background — a gradient, a "studio backdrop," a transparent-looking checkerboard the model faked — you inherit three problems:

  1. Edge contamination. The background color bleeds into the anti-aliased edges of your artwork. Extract it and you get a colored fringe around every element.
  2. Ambiguous selection. Tools like Color Range can't cleanly separate the design from a background that shares colors with the artwork.
  3. False transparency. Models love adding soft glows, drop shadows, and semi-transparent effects. None of these survive extraction. They become gray sludge or vanish entirely.

Before you write a single prompt, answer one question: black shirt or light shirt? The two paths are completely different.

Path 1: Black-Shirt Art → Generate on Pure Black

If the design is going on a black tee, generate it on a solid black #000000 background.

Why this works: you don't extract anything. The black background merges invisibly into the black garment. Anti-aliased edges blend into black fabric instead of fringing against it. What looks like a shortcut is actually the highest-fidelity path available — zero extraction means zero extraction artifacts.

That's it. When the design comes back, your "post-production" is a crop and an export.

Path 2: Light-Shirt Art → Generate on Chroma Green

If the design is going on a white, sand, or light-colored tee, you need real extraction — so give yourself a background built for it. Generate on chroma green #00B140, the same green used by film studios for a reason: it almost never appears in artwork, so a single Color Range selection lifts the entire background in one pass.

The exception: if your design is green- or yellow-heavy — say, a piece built around lime, forest green, or gold — chroma green will collide with your artwork and the key will eat holes in your design. Switch to chroma blue #0047FF instead:

The Universal Rules (Both Paths)

These apply to every design, regardless of shirt color. They're what separates art that looks good from art that prints good.

1. Thick black outlines on every element

Bold outlines do two jobs: they give Color Range a hard boundary to key against, and they make the design read from ten feet away — which is how shirts are actually seen. Thin, delicate linework disappears at print resolution and falls apart at the edges during extraction.

2. Zero pure-white elements

This is the rule that saves the most designs. Pure white (#FFFFFF) is a disaster twice over: on light shirts it keys out along with the background, leaving holes and halos; on dark prints it forces an underbase that rarely aligns perfectly. Instead, convert anything that "should" be white to bone-tan or silver-gray. Your eye reads it as white in context, but it survives extraction intact and prints with depth instead of flatness.

3. No glow effects

Glows, soft shadows, and light bloom are semi-transparent by nature. They cannot be extracted — they either disappear or turn into muddy gray fog around your design. If you want atmosphere, get it from color and composition, not transparency.

Keep the Prompt Simple

A counterintuitive finding from running this protocol across hundreds of generations: conversational prompts outperform technical ones. Describe the scene, the style, and the vibe in natural language, then append the chroma-key instructions. Don't stuff the prompt with resolution parameters, "8K," "vector," "print-ready," or CMYK jargon — the model doesn't honor them, and they crowd out the description that actually shapes the output.

Print preparation belongs in post-production, not in the prompt. Color correction, sizing to platform specs, and final cleanup happen in Photoshop or Photopea after extraction — never ask the image model to do them.
